Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Investment), Angellah Kairuki met with the incoming US Ambassador Donald J. Wright and discussed, among other things, the two countries’ bilateral ties, particularly in areas of investment.

During the meeting, Ambassador Wright assured the Minister that the US has been a major partner in business and investment and vowed that he will continue to work closely with government Ministries and authorities responsible for trade and investment during his tour of duty to ensure that more investments flow into the country from the US.

Minister Kairuki thanked Ambassador Wright for paying her a courtesy call, noting that he has been posted to the country at an opportune time where the government under the leadership of President John Magufuli has been taking deliberate measures to improve the country’s business and investment environment.

She also took the opportunity to thank the US government for encouraging American investors to come to Tanzania and expressed optimism that he would encouraged even more investors.

Tanzania and the US have been enjoying cordial bilateral relations in areas of trade and investment whereas the trade between the countries has been growing steadily over the years, especially during the fifth-phase government. For example, trade between the countries has increased from TZS 742.2 Billion to TZS 859.3 Billion in 2019. In the past four years Tanzania’s main exports to the US were agricultural produce, minerals and textile materials, whereas imports from the US included industrial machinery, airplanes, medical devices and pharmaceutical products.

The US is also among the five top investors in the country. According to 2019 data from Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), a total of 327 American projects have been registered at the Centre valued at US$ 295,659.2 Million. The projects have directly employed 49,182 Tanzanians and the main areas of investment are in agriculture, mining, transportation, hospitality and construction sectors.

Ambassador Wright started his tour of duty in the country in August 2020 after submitting his credentials to President John Pombe Magufuli.
